Building Department

The Building Department is responsible for building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical permitting through the administration of the State of Michigan Building Codes. The purpose of these codes is to establish a minimum standard protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the general public.

In addition, the Building Department is also responsible for soil erosion permitting through the administration of the Clinton County Soil Erosion and Sedimentation (SESC) Ordinance. The purpose of this ordinance is to maintain soil, preventing any sediment contamination of the Waters of the State or neighboring property. Link to SESC page

The Building Department provides Building permitting for 13 General Law Townships and the cities/villages within them. We provide Soil Erosion for all townships and inside jurisdictions within Clinton County, excluding Dewitt Charter Township. This change went into effect 02/17/2026. We still continue to provide Soil Erosion for the City of Dewitt.
